COME ONE, COME ALL/ August 13

It’s show time! It’s time to post your original poem, written in response to Monday’s prompt — our guest maestro’s idea to write about a specific possession (Thank you very much, Cynthia Short!) – or any other inspiration from the week. (We love it when you write to our prompt, but we also love it when you write on a whim. We all know how fickle that muse can be.)

Leave a link to your blog post, or leave your poem itself, in the comments! And remember: Although we love seeing our badge in the sidebar of your blog, we would appreciate it if you would also link back to the site in each of your poem posts. Linking within your post helps people travel back and forth from your site to the Big Tent Poetry site, and it helps perpetuate Big Tent Poetry “findability” in Google searches — and that helps us all.

Let the show begin! This post is “sticky” — it will stay right here in the spotlight for you all weekend.

Here’s how prompts work under the Big Tent

You’ve got all week to write your poem, based on this week’s prompt. Come Fridays (today!) you’ll find a “Come One, Come All” post (this one!) where you can 1) leave a link to your poem or 2) leave the poem in its entirety.

We want to give you all weekend to post your work and read each others’ work. Take your time. Enjoy all the poems that are new to the world.

Some hints

Hint: We’ve set Big Tent Poetry to Central Time.

Hint: An easy way to check on new post comments is via a RSS reader, if you use one. Here’s the address you would add to your reader: http://bigtentpoetry.org/comments/feed.

Hint: Since we’re a new site, and you’re new to it, your comment(s) will be held for moderation for your first few posts. We’re checking the filters often, so don’t despair! That said, if it takes more than a half a day to see it come live on the site, do email us at info (at) bigtentpoetry.org. (But be patient, okay?)

Circus etiquette

We figure you know how to play in the poetry community, but here are the basics:

Be nice. Have fun. Remember we aren’t a critique forum. We want to support each other as we bring more poetry into our lives. Only provide critique if someone specifically asks for it.

Announcement: A few weeks ago I posted a few responses to some of my favorite poems, one written by my mentor and advisor Dr. Kummings. I have since been in contact with Dr. Kummings and he has graciously sent me a copy of that original poem to which I responded, and given me permission to post it on my site. It is posted on a sidebar page under his name, if anyone is interested.

  26. Shayla on August 13, 2010 at 10:01 am

This prompt wandered a bit, but it’s still about something that I possess and that possesses me… that last part might be a bit too literal.

    Ghosts

  27. Kristie on August 13, 2010 at 10:12 am

This prompt was excellent. This is my first time posting here and I kind of messed up earlier this week trying to post this. Hopefully, I will get it right this time.

I have written about something I once was is possession of and how it is now possessing me instead. I hope you enjoy.

Could not resist writing a special Big Tent poem!

    “Come one, come all!”
    The barker’s call
    announces to the crowd.
    “Come into my Big Top!
    There’s plenty room for all!”

    “The tent won’t fall!
    Let’s have a ball!”
    His barker’s shout is loud.
    Curious, the folk stop.
    “Come on now, you-all!”

    The tent flaps caul
    the entrance maul;
    excitement makes him proud.
His circus will not be a flop,
    Oh, no! It will enthrall!

    • Deb on August 15, 2010 at 2:37 pm

      Thanks for that, Jinksy. :-)

Sometimes wannabe clowns show up under the tents as they are being taken down and the rest of the circus has moved on to another town. I’m sorry I am late. This was a great prompt. I am late to post and late to read, but better late than never? Here are a few poems that followed Cynthia’s thought-provoking prompt. Thanks! Nan’s possession poems.

Cynthia, I apologize for being late to your party. I was crossing a verbal street and was run over by a dangling participiālis.

    Of things possessed
