COME ONE, COME ALL / October 15

October 15, 2010

by Carolee, Deb & Jill

It’s show time! It’s time to post your original poem, written in response to Monday’s prompt — our latest Wordle — or any other inspiration from the week. (We love it when you write to our prompt, but we also love it when you write on a whim. We all know how fickle that muse can be.)

What did you write? Please leave a link to your blog post, or leave your poem itself, in the comments!

Let the show begin! This post is “sticky” — it will stay right here in the spotlight for you all weekend.

Here’s how prompts work under the Big Tent

You’ve got all week to write your poem, based on this week’s prompt. Come Fridays (today!) you’ll find a “Come One, Come All” post (this one!) where you can 1) leave a link to your poem or 2) leave the poem in its entirety.

We want to give you all weekend to post your work and read each others’ work. Take your time. Enjoy all the poems that are new to the world.

Some hints

Hint: We’ve set Big Tent Poetry to Central Time.

Hint: An easy way to check on new post comments is via a RSS reader, if you use one. Here’s the address you would add to your reader: http://bigtentpoetry.org/comments/feed.

Hint: Since we’re a new site, and you’re new to it, your comment(s) will be held for moderation for your first few posts. We’re checking the filters often, so don’t despair! That said, if it takes more than a half a day to see it come live on the site, do email us at info (at) bigtentpoetry.org. (But be patient, okay?)

Circus etiquette

We figure you know how to play in the poetry community, but here are the basics:

Be nice. Have fun. Remember we aren’t a critique forum. We want to support each other as we bring more poetry into our lives. Only provide critique if someone specifically asks for it.

Although we love seeing our badge in the sidebar of your blog, we would appreciate it if you would also link back to the site in each of your poem posts. Linking within your post helps people travel back and forth from your site to the Big Tent Poetry site, and it helps perpetuate Big Tent Poetry “findability” in Google searches — and that helps us all.

Well, that was fun! I do rather like wordles, although sometimes it’s a struggle to get all the words in without it being too obvious that that’s what I’m trying to do. :)

Since I’m technolocically challenged and don’t have my blogsite figured out yet, I’ll just post the whole poem.

    Living Colors

I love purple, blue, and green together. As my
brush kisses the canvas; the sky, the violets, the
drooping leaves form into a soothing balm.

In autumn I like to paint the misshapen gourd
that hooks the viewer with its mysterious lines,
colors, patterns, varied texture and glossy finish.

I hang my paintings along the staircase.
Each trip up and down is like a visit
to a mini art museum, no muddy colors–

crisp pink on the doll’s dress, sparkly yellow
of dandelions, a glint of silver on a bitter tear,
I extract the mood from a moment in time

like a poet paints life’s poignancy with words,
a dancer evokes beauty and joy with movement,
or a musician plucks sorrow from a fiddle.

    • Michelle Hed on October 15, 2010 at 12:36 pm

Lovely Connie! I would like to see your paintings!

This is a lovely rainbow of a poem. And how cleverly you used the wordle words, so that I had to search to identify them – I’ve given up for a bit as the words in my attempt leap out and bite with incongruity!

    • Sharp Little Pencil on October 16, 2010 at 12:21 pm

Connie, you may be blog-challenged, but word-challenged you are not. Do you actually paint as well as write poetry? Your poem was a hymn to oils, acrylics… the textural kind of painting I love so much. GREAT take on the Wordle!

See you at PA and here again soon, I hope! Amy BL

    Imagination

    The little girl
    had gone outside to play,
when she realized she forgot her doll.
    So she ran back inside
    and up the staircase
leaving a trail of muddy footprints.

    She grabbed her doll, Ellie,
and made haste to get back outside,
never seeing the muddy trail she
    left behind.

She headed back out across the meadow,
where in the curtain of Willow tree
she had left an old blanket.
She loved to lay on the blanket and
watch the family of bluebirds that
lived in the gourd Grandpa had made
    into a bird house.
Grandpa had hung the gourd from a hook,
on one of the sturdy inner branches of the willow tree.

Underneath the drooping sway of the willow branches
the little girl would pretend to be an Indian Princess
of a far off land. Her Princess would have lots of pluck
or maybe it was luck, she couldn’t quite remember
    what pluck meant.

The Princess had long, glossy black hair
and had the power to extract handshakes
from and of her loyal subjects. (The little girl
would have extracted kisses but she thought
    they were pretty gross.)

The little girl played out under the Willow tree
until the fading rays of the sun
kissed the sky with streaks of purple.

When the little girl headed inside
she was exhausted from playing in the fresh air.
But her day ended on a bitter note,
as her Mother met her with the vacuum cleaner
and pointed to the dried mud on the staircase.

The little girl gave her Mother an apologetic, half smile,
and as she grabbed the vacuum cleaner
her imagination fired up and she was now
a poor, dirty maid wishing for her prince to come save her.

Michelle, Amy from PA here. Man, you need to set up a blog! I loved this, a turnabout on Cinderella… the princess becomes the little girl forced to clean up her mess.

Sharon, Blogger is being hinky about taking comments. Your link led me to the last prompt, on songs. Here is my comment on that:
      ———————————–
“Afraid to swallow your tense” WOW, that is an amazing line, Sharon. I didn’t do this prompt, and now I’m regretting it… Also, the title, “scars me still,” evocative and so sad.

So glad I can link your blog to mine now.

      Peace, Amy
