GAITHERSBURG, MD — Organizers of the Gaithersburg Book Festival said the high school’s annual poetry contest is now open for submissions. The theme for 2023 is diversity or inclusion.
First and second place winners will receive $250 and $100, respectively. Third place winners and fan favorites will receive $50 and $25, respectively.
Winners will be announced at the Gaithersburg Book Festival, taking place May 20, 2023, at Bohrer Park at Summit Hall Farm, 506 S. Frederick Ave. in Gaithersburg.
“Throughout the years that we have organized this competition, the talent shown by our young poets has been incredible. I expect 2023 to be no different,” Jud Ashman, festival president and mayor of Gaithersburg, said in a press release. “I look forward to hearing the voices of our next generation, as they share their unique perspectives on diversity and inclusion.”
To participate, students must be enrolled in grades 9 through 12 in a public or private school, or be in a home-schooling program, for the 2022-2023 school year. Entrants must live in Maryland, Virginia, or the District of Columbia.

- The file name should be the title of the poem only (e.g. The_Red_Fern.doc)
- Do not include the student or school name in the file name

By submitting work to the competition, students grant Gaithersburg Book Festival a non-exclusive license to publish, distribute, transmit and exhibit the poem, and any portion thereof, via any medium without financial compensation.
