First place in the Italian poetry contest

Paula Andrade, left, with her Italian teacher Teresa Clausi.

Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK High School Junior Paula Andrade won first place in the Italian Poetry Contest of the Long Island Chapter of the American Association of Italian Teachers (AATI). Paula won the contest with her recitation of the poem Il Colore de Mestieri (The Color of Trades) by acclaimed children’s author, Gianna Rodari.

Each year, Italian language students at POBJFKHS participate in the AATI competition, which requires them to memorize an Italian poem by heart and perform it in front of a jury. Their performance is judged against that of Italian language students from Long Island.

It Colors by Mestieri emphasizes the important roles that different professions play in society.
