The winners of the 2021 poetry contest are:
- Richard Strickland, “An Ode to Dr. Press”: Written in honor of Dr. Oliver Press, who treated Strickland was diagnosed with CLL. Press himself later died of brain cancer.
- Dana Stewart, “The couch”: This poem tells the story of Stewart’s journey with therapy due to PTSD from her breast cancer diagnosis. It’s about the cancer that keeps coming into the session, but the sofa that supports it.
- Amy Smart, “Raise Your Crown”: After Smart was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer at age 39, losing her hair was one of the hardest parts of her journey. This poem is about how people say “it’s just hair”, but for her and other patients, it’s more than that; it is a sign of the journey they are on and a path over which they have no control.
- Desiree LeRoy, “Texting You”: Written in honor of her friend who died of breast cancer, this poem is made up of text messages between the two women talking at different stages of the journey.
The four winning poems will be featured in HEAL® Fall 2021 print issue of the magazine.
