Bucks County High School Scribes Encouraged to Enter 35th Annual Poetry Contest

NEWTOWN >> Bucks County Community College, which has nurtured writers for more than 50 years, is inviting young creatives to enter Bucks County High School’s 35th Annual Poet of the Year Contest for a chance to win $300.

Students have until Friday, March 11 to submit three original poems, according to Dr. Ethel Rackin, director of the Bucks County Poet Laureate Program, which runs the Bucks County High School Poet of the Year competition.

The competition is open to freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors who live in Bucks County or attend a Bucks County high school. Home-schooled students can also enter. Previous winners are not eligible.

In addition to the cash prize, the winner receives a proclamation from the Bucks County Commissioners and the opportunity to read at a public reception. Contest finalists and runners-up will also be invited to read at the public event.

“Participating in the High School Poet of the Year competition can give students a chance to discover and develop a talent they may not have realized they had,” said Rackin, a language and literature teacher. literature at Bucks. Additionally, participating in public poetry readings can help a student stand out in a college search.

“Commitment to contest, public reading and anthology on college applications will demonstrate initiative, writing skills and experience in public speaking,” Rackin added. “Obviously, there is a lot to be gained from entering this contest.”

The competition will be judged by current Bucks County Poet Laureate Nicole Steinberg and former Poet Laureate Jane Edna Mohler.
