By James Rodgers, Poet Laureate of Auburn
As we approach the end of April, with the end of National Poetry Month, I wanted to take a moment to highlight some of my favorites from the Auburn Youth Poetry Contest. I received a bunch of submissions, and while I’m not a fan of picking favorites, I wanted to highlight a few that made me smile — or think.

Sunlight
Wonder
or
sunlight
hides
under
waves
It is
you
my
child
It is
you
the sunlight
wonder
waves
I know
in my
heart that
you’re so
generous

Minecraft
A faint torch lights my way
Light up my surroundings
A deep, dark cave wraps me in thick shadow
Strange sounds approach me from all angles.
crawling spiders,
Their web obstructs my view.
Finally I saw it, oh! My darling prize!
There they lay
Right before my tired eyes
Diamonds
The greatest jewel one can ever own,
It’s just a shame that it all ended with an invisible “HISSSSSS”.

Thank you to all the fun entries, and to all the teachers and parents who submitted. Hopefully we can have an even bigger pool of entries to choose from in 2022!
